Specular light photography skin#
Normally I would do a full on skin retouch using frequency separation and a few other techniques but I usually only do that on the one actual image I choose from the shoot as it takes me half a day just retouching a single image, actually half a day isn’t bad I can spend days on a single image.
In terms of retouching I used a healing brush to remove imperfections and just added a black and white and curves adjustment layer. Specular Reflections occur when light bounces off a flat, smooth, reflective surface like a mirror, a car bonnet, a window or the gloss surface of a floor. Here are a few photographs I took of Rhianna I always love working with her as she’s up for pretty much anything and we kind of have this trust in one another which kind of means half of the shoot we’re just experimenting she’s trying out different poses and I’m just messing with lights most the time.įor this shoot I used a beauty dish with a silver lining, which I feel adds a lot more specularity as the highlights just glow whenever I use this modifier and that was pretty much it the rest is history. This is a type of light that is bright and comes from a smaller surface area it creates well defined shadows and highlights, the gradient between light and dark is also very small and almost a straight cut from shadow to highlight. The distinction may be illustrated with surfaces coated with glossy paint and matte paint. Reflections can be hard to capture because they involve you looking at your perspective differently, or in a less traditional sense than you normally would. Specular reflection reflects all light which arrives from a given direction at the same angle, whereas diffuse reflection reflects light in a broad range of directions. However sometimes soft light just doesn’t cut it as beautiful as soft light is it lacks the drama associated with specular lights or better known as a hard light. Reflection photography is a challenging, special type of photography that requires a decent comprehension of the perspective, angles and of course an artistic eye and flair.
In the photo above, the water is creating a. In that case V is identical to R and the angle is zero. I love soft light that wraps around everything, it’s my go to lighting for portraits. An example of specular reflection in photography is taking a picture of a reflection in a still body of water. The idea behind specular light is that the strength of the reflected light is going to be at its maximum along the vector R.
